“At the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, we are listening, and we stand fully behind these efforts. We deeply appreciate the courage and dedication of all those involved in this vital cause. Together, we must unite our voices to end violence against women and girls. Let us all support this campaign and work towards a safer world for everyone,” said Mr. Thijs Woudstra, Deputy Ambassador of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangladesh as Chief Guest, during an event today at Alliance Francaise de Dhaka to mark the global 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence.

Every ten minutes, somewhere in the world, a woman loses her life due to gender-based violence. This tragic reality is also evident in Bangladesh, where violence against women continues to rise. In Bangladesh, around 54% of married or previously married women have experienced physical or sexual violence from their spouses at least once in their lifetime. While some survivors find the strength to speak out, many others remain silent, enduring the abuse in isolation.

To raise awareness and amplify the voices of those who are often unheard, the annual 16 Days of Activism campaign is held globally, with this year’s theme “Towards Beijing +30: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls.” This campaign calls for unity in the fight for women’s rights and safety, urging women to advocate for themselves and demand an end to violence.

This year, the Netherlands Embassy initiated a powerful social media campaign mobilising social media influencers, activists and singers. In Dhaka, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands hosted a special event at Alliance Francaise to unite voices against gender-based violence. The event featured a dynamic mix of music, activism, and solidarity. Also in attendance were renowned singers, music bands, social workers and women’s rights activists as well as journalists such as Farzana Wahid Shayan, Sovvota, Warda Ashraf, Masha, Nablia Aftabi, Khalid Saifullah, F-Minor, Bangla 5, Aseis and others.

The evening began with a speech by Mr. M François Grosjean, Director of Alliance Francaise Dhaka, who emphasised the urgent need to tackle the root causes of gender-based violence in Bangladesh. “We all have to come forward from everyone’s position. Along with such big events, we need to raise our voices against all kinds of violence in the streets, at work, at home every day, only then will real change come..” said Mr. M François Grosjean.

Over 50 participants attended, including notable guests who shared their personal stories and experiences, underscoring the importance of this cause.

As the event concluded, all guests and attendees pledged to continue their efforts to amplify their voices and end gender-based violence, both in Bangladesh and around the world. The event was organised by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with strategic support from Red Orange Limited for the campaign and event coordination.
