Green buildings help reduce negative impacts on the natural environment by using less water, energy, and other natural resources; employing renewable energy sources and eco-friendly materials; and reducing emissions and other waste materials.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which is developed by US Green Building Council (USGBC) and Green Building Certification Incorporation (GBCI), is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. This is the globally accepted standard for LEED Certification. Available for all building types, LEED provides a framework for healthy, efficient, and cost-saving green buildings.

The LEED has different levels of certification: LEED platinum, LEED gold, LEED Silver and certified. A project is approved when it achieves 40 points;it is considered as Silver certified when it scores 50 points, Gold certified on achieving 60 points, and LEED Platinum certifiedon earningthe 80 out of 110 points benchmarks. Bangladesh, which has demonstrated exceptional dedication to eco-friendly practices, has 257 LEED-certified factories so far, with 100 platinum and 146 gold-rated factories. Currently, Bangladesh is home to 54 of the top 100 LEED-certified factories globally, including nine out of the top 10, and 18 out of the top 20 units.

Maf Footwear Ltd is a 100% export-oriented quality athletic shoe, sandal, slipper, & flip-flop manufacturing factory with the ability to deliver impeccable quality and timely shipment within a framework through a reliable and sincereprofessional business atmosphere. It manufactures a wide range of footwear for all age groups and is equipped with vertical production units. Maf Footwear Ltd is the only shoe factory which produces various footwear related finish products and semi-finished products in same factory premise.

On September 11, 2024, Maf Footwear Ltd was awarded LEED Platinum Certification by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and Green Building Certification Incorporation (GBCI) in the existing building category (EB O+M V4.1). The project is located in the Nasirabad Industrial area of the port city of Chattogram. The state-of-the-artshoe manufacturing factory, which is about 5.5 lakh square feet in area, has a unique architectural view, enough open space, more than 30% fresh air into the production space (A requirementas per the ASHRAE guideline), 450 KW renewable energy (rooftop solar), rainwater harvesting system, efficient waste management system, low emitting (DG or sandwich) glass at the mechanically ventilated area, and various other energy efficient measures. The building has performed excellently in energy and water saving capacity. It hasa green roof and the open spaces at the factory premises also feature a green landscape.

With such exemplary performance in energy leadership, Maf Footwear Ltd has achieved 85 points out of 100 benchmarks (total points),which is the highest for any shoe factories in Bangladesh.
