The envoys of China, India and Pakistan on Sunday paid courtesy calls on Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, congratulating the new government and expressing readiness to work closely with Dhaka.
‎
The diplomats congratulated Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on leading the Bangladesh Nationalist Party to a decisive victory in the general elections, which they described as among the most free and fair in the country’s history. They also felicitated Khalilur Rahman on assuming office as foreign minister.
‎
Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen conveyed Beijing’s firm support for Prime Minister Rahman’s “Bangladesh First” policy, saying the Chinese leadership was keen to work closely with the new government to further deepen bilateral cooperation.
‎
‎The foreign minister stressed the importance of advancing the Bangladesh–China Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership and called for stronger Chinese engagement with all relevant stakeholders to facilitate early repatriation of the Rohingyas.
‎
‎Ambassador Yao also conveyed an invitation from the Chinese foreign minister for Khalilur Rahman to visit China at a mutually convenient time.
‎
Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma expressed New Delhi’s readiness to work closely with the new government to further advance bilateral cooperation.
‎
‎Khalilur Rahman said Bangladesh sought a forward-looking and balanced partnership with India based on mutual interest and benefit. Both sides agreed to maintain regular and constructive engagement to strengthen relations.
‎
‎Verma extended an invitation from Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for the foreign minister to visit New Delhi at an early date.
‎
Pakistani High Commissioner Imran Haider conveyed Islamabad’s keen interest in working closely with the new government to broaden bilateral cooperation.
‎
‎ The foreign minister said Bangladesh was open to exploring new avenues of collaboration for the welfare of the peoples of both countries, while also emphasising Dhaka’s priority of strengthening regional cooperation across South Asia.
‎
Later, the three envoys also met State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam.
